ST PATRICKS DAY – PARTY IN A BOX
And even if you aren’t Irish, everyone gets to be a wee bit Irish on St. Patty’s Day so here are some ideas for a great
St. Patrick’s Day party!
Throwing an Irish-themed party, especially on St. Patrick’s Day, means going GREEN. Green streamers, green light bulbs in your lamps, green helium balloons and shamrock-shaped party lights.
Gold-foil-wrapped chocolate coins and lucky charms are great table decorations – as well as great snacks. Find a big rock (or make one out of Styrofoam or papier-mâché) to be your ‘Blarney’ Stone. Position it near the door so guests must kiss it when they enter. Legend has it that kissing the actual stone is supposed to give the kisser the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness!
GREEN is the way to go with your St. Patrick’s Day gear. Lads and lassies alike can get into the spirit of St. Patrick’s by breaking out all the green clothing they can, pinning on a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” button and topping it all off with a green leprechaun’s hat. Alternatively dress as a Leprechaun by wearing a green blazer, a green scarf and a green bowler hat with a shamrock sticking out of it.
Have a CD of traditional Irish songs playing and print out the lyrics so guests can croon along to classics like “Danny Boy.”
GREEN snacks. Get out your Green food colouring; you’ll need it to dye everything from mashed potatoes to beer. A big tray of green grapes, celery, peppers, cucumbers, apples and green guacamole tortilla chips. You can add green food colouring to dressing for the veggies, and to yogurt for the fruit.
Cut sandwiches into shamrock shapes by using a cookie cutter
Make a Clover Cake with a heart shape cake pan. Make four hearts and put them all together at the points. Decorate with green icing and green M&Ms or other candy.
In addition to green-coloured treats, serve traditional Irish favourites like corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread and lots of preatties (potatoes) – mini baked ones are great.
For sweet snacks, put out bowls of Green M&Ms and Green jelly beans. Or make shamrock cookies using a clover-shaped cookie cutter.
Don’t forget the Guinness and Irish whiskey. Don’t forget Irish Coffee..
Have a big Irish or Green mug, combine whiskey, sugar and coffee. Stir to dissolve. Top with heavy cream to taste! YUM!
For Non-Alcoholic drinks why not Mint milkshakes, Gatorade and Green Kool-Aid.
‘OUT OF THE BOX’ EXPERIENTIAL PARTY IDEAS
- Drinking is the most popular way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
- Pub crawls to local Irish haunts
- Kissing the ‘Blarney Stone’ backwards!
- Hand out paper and pens and give your guests five minutes to write a limerick, then read them out loud and prizes for the best Irish accents.
- Send your guests on a Treasure Hunt for a leprechaun’s Pot of Gold. Before guests arrive, hide your treasure (gold-foil-wrapped chocolate coins in a small basket or glass, then have guests search for it throughout the party.
- Coin Hunt – Tell your guests that the Leprechaun has lost all of his gold. Hide gold chocolate coins around the party venue. Who ever finds the most wins! You can vary this by making a few silver coins (wrap in tin foil) and tell your guests that who ever finds the silver coins wins a special prize.
- “Leprechaun Says” – Just like Simon says except it’s a leprechaun.
- Green Scavenger Hunt – Have your guests find things that are green, who ever finds the most wins! Don’t try this game outdoors, otherwise your grass, trees and bushes may get attacked!
- Coin Toss – The guest who throws the most chocolate gold coins in the pot wins.
- Irish Musical Chairs – Use Irish music and tape four-leaf clovers on the chairs.
- Luck of the Irish – Hang Irish-theme pictures around your party venue. Play Irish music and have your guests dance a jig. When the music stops the guests must stand below one of the pictures. Pick a picture out of a hat and who ever is under that picture is out. Last person standing wins!
- Pin the Clover on the Leprechaun
